Everytime my runs get dried out here comes the rain again this has been the wettest year I have ever seen. I think some of girls are getting webbed feet lol. I keep the runs covered for the most part but it's been raining so much it seeps through anyway. Who else has been getting flooded out this year?

We've got almost everything in hutches up off the ground. Its been nearly impossible this year to keep things neat and tidy with all the water here in Indiana. We lost almost every single turkey egg this year due to mud, we put straw down and hay but it rained and it managed to muck up the eggs even with fresh straw. We moved the chicken tractors, but the ground was so water logged they would muddy the new spots as fast as the old ones. We primarily raise waterfowl, and they loved the weather this year...perfect for them! The chickens on the other hand didn't look very good most of the Spring, so we moved them all up into hutches. They get out to free-range, but we have to alternate them because of the three different breeds. Luckily I only have the Wyandotte bantam rooster and the Nankin rooster, so I can turn most of them loose at any given time, without the worry of crossbreeding.

It's pouring rain as I type this.  we have coops & covered runs for the birds, but in this damp weather they smell to the high heavens.  Nothing like the smell of wet chicken poop.

Here in upstate New York we have had the third wettest summer in history.  Sept. was better but it is back to wet again  these last few weeks.  It was the worst gardening year we have ever had-lots of blight on the tomatoes and potatoes-think Irish potato famine.
While some runs are a little better than others most are a mucky mess and all the hens have muddy backs from being bred by cockerals with dirty feet.  I just try to stay on my feet, nothing quite so slippery as mud and poop.   Soon enough this will all freeze and the rain will turn to snow.  Howard

If you can send us a little of the white stuff I would love to have a white Christmas this year.lol

Yeah!! The sun's been out for a couple of days and I can finally get everything cleaned up and ready for winter. There is so many little projects I have hated to do around the pens with it being so muddy now I don't have any excuse so I guess I will get off here and get to work. Hope everyone has a good day.

It was great to get up to the sound of another flooding rain today.lol The yard between my lots is like walking on a big soppy sponge! I normarlly plant a large plot of greens to feed the birds through the fall but with all the rain I was'nt able to, I guess the girls will have to wait on spring this year.

I dont know if anyone else uses wood for heat but this has been a miserable year for it. I only use it as secondary source of heat but it still helps with the electric bill a little. But due to all this rain we are having I can't get my truck into the woods where I have the wood cut. Four wheel drive is no use in this muck we have here right now I thought it would be dry this weekend....but noooo woke up to rain and the chance of it turning to snow this weekend. I can't wait for spring!

N 3:  Just think, you have only 3 days left until winter!  And then, you can count down the 89 days of winter to spring!!!  Thankfully, winter is the shortest season, with only 89 days, so that is something you may look forward to!!!  (Oops! A streak of ornery slipped out there)

I hear you about this winter nonsense.  I am with you;  can hardly wait until spring and warm weather.  I just hope this year is drier than the last.  Seems we had nothing but rain and muck all year.  Ugh!!!

HA!  Seed catalogs and hatchery catalogs.  It is the government's way of tormenting us all winter long.  They send them out, knowing we can't do anything about them until spring, and that is a long, long way off.  Yup, torture by the best government money can buy!  Mental anguish so we keep out minds off the other things they are fouling up.

How are you all managing in this latest storm?
It has been very cold here-zero yesterday morning and a big storm is working its way up the East coast.
Stay home and stay safe!

Rain and snow here the last two days in East Tenn. miserable weather. I think if this keeps up I will take up raising ducks or pigs then I won't be concerned with the condition of the runs or how much water is standing in them.lol

RU NUTZ?  Hogs stink worse on a dry day than chickens do on the wettest day!  Only thing a hog is good for is bacon and ham, and then someone else can raise them and deal with the aroma.  Not this child!  Been too close to too many hogs in my time.  Ain't goin' there, again.
